Mere Hamdum Mere Dost (Translation)


This is my one of the favorite Ghazal from Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

And this is my amateur attempt to translate it into English.

There is no way I can ever reach the essence of this poetry which Faiz meant but yet since because of extreme  likeness for this Ghazal, I thought to translate it. Translation is metaphoric.

گر مجھے اس کا یقین ھو مرے ھمدم مرے دوست

گر مجھے اس کا یقین ھو کہ ِترے دل کی تھکن

If I were sure about you my companion my friend

If I knew debilitation of your desolated heart

تیری آنکھوں کی اداسی ، ترے سینے کی جلن

میری دل جوئی ، مرے پیار سے مٹ جائے گی

Melancholy of your eyes, agony of your soul

Will rest with my care

گر مرا حرفِ تسلّی وہ دوا ھو جس سے

جی اٹھے پھر ترا اجڑا ھوا بے نور دماغ

If my redemptive words can

rejuvenate your abandoned mind

تیری پیشانی سے دھل جائیں یہ تذلیل کے داغ

تیری بیمار جوانی کو شفا ھو جائے

If they can wash away the marks of humiliation

I pray, your dejected youth resuscitates

گر مجھے اس کا یقین ھو مرے ھمدم ، مرے دوست

روز و شب ، شام و سحر میں تجھے بہلاتا رھوں میں

If I were sure about it my companion, my friend
I  would comfort you each day and night

میں تجھے گیت سناتا رھوں ھلکے ، شیریں

آبشاروں کے بہاروں کے ، چمن زاروں کے گیت

گیت آمدِ صبح کے ، مہتاب کے ، سیّاروں کے گیت

With Sweet Ballads of dancing waterfalls

tinkling springs,and bloming gardens

With ballads of unveiling morning, sun and planets.

تجھ سے میں حسن و محبت کی حکایات کہوں

کیسے مغرور حسیناؤں کے برفاب سے جسم

گرم ھاتھوں کی حرارت میں پگھل جاتے ھیں

I would read to you, the mysteries of beauty and love

How icy blue souls of arrogant fairies

melt with the warmth of beloved hands

کیسے اک چہرے کے ٹھہرے ھوئے مانوس نقوش

دیکھتے دیکھتے یک لخت بدل جاتے ھیں

How impressions of familiar faces

Change in a blink of moments.

کس طرح عارضِ محبوب کا شفّاف بلور

یک بیک بادہِ احمر سے دہک جاتا ھے

How the pure crystal of beloved’s instinct

is aflame by red spirits.

کیسے گلچیں کے لئے جھکتی ھے خود شاخِ گلاب

کس طرح رات کا ایوان مہک جاتا ھے

How limp of rose bends itself for Nightingale

How fragrance disperse in alienated nights

یونہی گاتا رھوں ، گاتا رھوں تیری خاطر

گیت ُبنتا رھوں، بیٹھا رھوں تیری خاطر 

The pace of my song may never end
Lest I continue to sing for you

پر مرے گیت ترے دکھ کا ُمداوا ھی نہیں

نغمہ جرّاح نہیں، مونس و غم خوار سہی

I know my songs are not compensation for your grieves
These ballads wont redeem you from sorrows

 گیت نشتر تو نہیں ، مرھم ِ آزار سہی

 تیرے آزار کا چارہ نہیں، نشتر کے سوا

My Ballads are not lancet for your pain,but let them be ointment
Only flem is a solution to your agony

اور یہ سفّاک مسیحا مرے قضے میں نہیں

اس جہاں کے کسی ذی روح کے قبضے میں نہیں

ھاں مگر تیرے سوا ، تیرے سوا ، تیرے سوا

That ferocious liberator is not in my reach
Not in reach of any soul in this locality

But with yourself, yourself and yourself.

I m sorry that I m replying here ,caz I don’t know how to leave a comment ,a wonderful traslation ,but being a Farsi ,pushto ,and Urdu speaking person I want to add into this traslation , u know gulchean doesn’t mean nightingale .gulchean mean the one who is an expert of flowers plucking ,and expert of beautiful collection ..here what poet want to convey that for an expert of beauty , or art ,philosophy or for any expert opportunities knock at its door and expert is not the one burdening himself for opportunities . Like they says boe Ann ast k khud bowad na ann k attar bowad ..like if u r honest and sincere in loving some one u ll get ur love ur ll love will knock at ur door ..so for gulcheen I would say be the best word in English is flower collector ..

  4. The poem is really beautiful. Really Ioved your choice of words. However, the part “pray, your dejected youth resuscitates” somehow doesn’t go with the flow. But overall, in all honesty, great job!!! Do some more!

  5. This has such a good feel to it. Progressive. Me and my english medium colleagues can definitely find some real poetry in these translations because we shamefully aren’t too good with Urdu. This is utterly brilliant. Good job

    …and although i’m of the view that urdu is such a romance no other language can do justice to its words and meanings, you’ve done an outstanding job translating it without loosing the soul of the piece!

(humara tawazun hi bigard gia) …gar jo aap yunhi kam aqli ka muzahira kerte rahe to kese barde admi banainge?aur mulk o qaum ka naam roshan kerainge??daikhen, humain qaum ki ta’meer keliye ese me’maar derkaar hain jinke dimaghon main ‘kam’ nahi kaafi aqal ho. = p

    1. محترمہ کیا کریں، غلطیاں انسانوں سے ہی ہوتی ہیں، لیکن میری بد بختی کے پہلی غلطی مجھ سے یہ سرزد ہوگیی کے اپکا جنس اتفاقاً تبدیل ہوگیا… قصور میرا بھی نہیں، آپ کے نام کی اہمیت اور اس کی سناخت کو سمجھ نہیں سکا. پہلی غلطی تو ویسے بھی معاف ہوتی ہے. محمّد علی رودولوی صاحب نے اپنی ایک تحریر میں باقاعدہ غلطی سرزد ہونے کا تذکرہ کرتے ہوے اللّہ میاں سے شکوہ کیا ہے کے حضرت آدم عليه السلام سے غلطی ہوئی تو کچھ نہیں کہا، کیوں کے وہ تیرے مقرب بندے تھے، ہم سے غلطی ہو تو فورن پکڑ. اور رہی جہاں تلک بات عقل کی، تو ابھی ہم طفل مکتب ہیں، عمر کے ساتھ وہ بھی آجائیگی.

  8. mohtaram, kya khoob hi mantaq hai apki, ya’ani maan rahe hain ke ghalti hui magar qusur phir bhi apka nahi! to qusur hai kiska?kursi, maiz yan phir pankhe ka?
    aur ye kin zaat-e-sharif ne apse keh dia ke pehli ghalti maaf hai?gar jo aap kisi ki jaan le len to kya kehainge dunia se?ya’ani muqabil jaan se gya aur apki (pehli) khtaa theri! dekhain, ghalti ghalti hoti hai pehli ho yan akhri kyunke na to aap muhammad ali radaulvi hain aur na hi koi aur, aap rana usman hain jo tareekh ke aik ese daur main rehta hai jahan ghaltion ki qatan gunjaish nahi.
    …aur mazeed yeh ke tifal maktab to hum bhi hain magar majaal hai jo kabhi kahin laghzish hojaye. = )

    1. اتنی شدت سے تو مجھے غلطی کا احساس کبھی نا ھوا تھا جتنا آپ کی بدولت ھو گیا ھے۔

      اب بات یی ھےکے غلطی کس نویت کی ھے ورنا تو ایک غلطی بروٹس نے بھی کی تھی جس کے باعث کلوپیٹرا نے اپنی ساری زندگی اپنے کپڑوں پی لگے سیزر کے خون کے نشان دھونے میں گزار دی اور ایک غلطی فیض صاحب نے “رقیب سے ” لکھ کے کی،جس کے باعث بہت سے عاشق اپنے رقیبوں سے محبّت میں مبتلا ہوگیے، اب رہی بات میری، تو مجھے کیا علم تھا کے شاعروں اور ادیبوں کے علاوہ زیست نام کے لئے بھی استعمال ہوتا ہے اور ستم ظریفی یہ کے چونکے زیست ہے بھی فارسی زبان کا لفظ تو میرے وہم و گمان میں بھی نہ تھا کے جس سخص کا نام زیست ہو، وہ اردو بھی بول سکتا ہے. لیکن اب کیا ہو سکتا ہے، پانی سر سے گزر چکا ہے. اب تو بس ایک ہی بات ذہن میں اتی ہے.

      کیا میرا تذکرہ جو ساقی نے بادہ خوروں کی انجمن میں
      تو پیر میخانہ سن کر کہنے لگا، مہ پھٹ ہے، خوار ہوگا.

      1. -chuckles- mohtaram,wo ghalti faiz ki nahi un saada loh mashooqon ki hai jinhone ese naqabile aitebar aur intehai bewafa qisam ke aashiq paale. aur ghalti to khair brutus bechare ki bhi koi nahi ke kam aqal to cleopetra thi jisne surf excel ke bajaye koi yunhi sa gaaye bhens marka desi saban istemal kerne ko tarjih di,to nishan kese jate?
        jahan tak baat apki ghalti ki hai to wo hum pehle hi apke gosh guzar ker chuke hain ke intehai sangeen nauiat ki hai.yani apko ye ilm na hosaka ke zeest naam ki shakhs urdu bhi bol sakti hai magar ‘thankyou sir’ kehne se peshtar ye baat dar-khor-e-aite’na na jani apne ke zeest naam ki shakhs urdu shairi pardh, sun aur pasand bhi kersakti hai! ab hone ko to bohat kuch hosakta hai aur na hone ko kuch bhi nahi, maslan ho ye sakta hai ke hum muta’adid bar apke ghar ki itla’ai ghanti baja ker bhaag sakte hain aur apni subki ka badla chuka sakte hain aur na hone ko ye hosakta hai ke humare dil main khof-e-muhalla jaag jaye aur hum ye irada tarak kerdain…
        (maaf kijiega mera maqsad apko, um, bura(read terrible) mehsoos kerwana hergiz nahi tha…)

      2. HAHAHA

        Mein tou Cleopatra ki kismat ko koos raha hon, uski kismat mein kahan tha ke aap jaisi ba’sha’ur aur dana khatun uski musheer hoti, gar hotien tou yaqeenan uski “peshani se dhul jatey woh Tazleel ke Daag”. Tarf e Tamasha yeh ke corporate media ka bhe door door tak wajood na tha warna shayad kapre dhonay tak baat he na ati, woh pehle he sahir lodhi wala ariel ka ad dekh kar khudkushi ko tarjeeh deti.

        Jahan tak baat phir se ghalati ki hai, mein phir se baday dil ke sath yeh tasleem karta hon ke ji haan muj se ghalati huwi, lekin meri mubham si ghalati ka anjaam itna behanak niklega, mere vehm o gumaan mein bhe na tha. Aisa mehsoos hota hai jaisay hiran apni khaal utar kar khud nachta gata sher ke samne aya hai aur lehra lehra ke keh raha hai “Aaa Sher Muje Kha” go ke muje yaqeen hai mohawarey ko tabdeel karne ke baad Bailon ki committee khafgi ka izhaar zaroor karegi.

        Aur rahi baat Ghanti bajanay ki, tou adhi jawani isi kaam mein zaya ki hai hum ne, yahan tak ke jis ghar ki khas taur per hum rozana ghanti bajatay thay, uska guard humarey pechay apne yamaha 100 pe lag gaya aur hum pedal bhagte rahey. Lehaza yeh dhamki hum ne zayada asar nahi karegi, Woh Kia kehte hain

        rangeen lahu se panja e sayyad kuch to ho
        khoon per gavah daaman e jallad kuch to ho
        jab khoon baha talab karein bunyaad kuch to ho

        Dekhte hain, Kitna rangeen hota hai apka Panja.

      3. mohtaram, paziraai ka shukria magar us kam aqal ki kismat ka kia malaal kerna,hum to kehte hain bande ne agar itna bashaur or dana hoke b kisi kam aqal ki musheeri hi kerni hai to tuff hai esi danai per! gar jo hum tareekh ke us aihad main hote to zara sochen aaj ki dunia ka to manzar nama hi aur hota. sab se pehle to hum veena malik ke aabao ajdaad ko qasid bhej ker khabardaar kerte ke foran se peshtar behboode abadi walon se rabta qaim kerain kyunke humare shaur ke parde per mustaqbil ki jo tasveer hai us main apke naam ke sath kuch achi nahi hone wali. Dusre hum un kasrat-e-wazan wale jungli qisam ke insan ke buzurgon se bhi milte jin ke pichle hisse ne humare aziz-az-jaan kaptaan ko takar mar ker lifter se giraya! or iltija kerte ke khudara apni aane wali naslon ko khuraak aur kasrat main tawazun paida kerna sikhain.
        Aur phir hum muhammad ali rodolvi sahab ki khidmat main to zaroor hi arz ker jate ke hazrat mustaqbil door main apki tehreer pardhne wale aik banda-e-khaas mohtaram rana usman ko apni tehriron ke zariye ye bhi bata jain ke Mian Usman zeest naam roz-e-azal se sinf-e-nazuk ke qabile se taluk rakhne walon keliye istemal hota araha hai or hota rahega rehti dunia tak! Yani had hogai! mubham si ghalti? hum jo apko mohtaram ke bajaye mohtarmA pukarain to apke dil per kia beete gi?seh sakegi aap ki aadmiat esa taaziana? yani humari shakhsiat na hui sheeshe steel ka glaas hogai leker ulat di! dekhain, ghalati chahe ap dil ke sath tasleem kerain yan band bajay ke sath aik baat to aap zehen nasheen kerlain mohtaram ke humare azaar ka yun chara nahi! yani ab to had hi hogai kabhi ap humain ‘sir’ banadete hain kabhi ‘peer maikhana’ to kabhi ‘shair’ wo bhi kafi khun-khaar qisam ka or to or ab to apne humain (bilawasta)‘behanak’ tak ka khitaab de dia! mohtaram hum aik aurat hain, Helen of Troy nahi to kisi se kam bhi nahi, Alhamdullilah! aur apko yeh haqeeqat tasleem kerna hi hogi!
        Ab chunke apne humare aurat hone ko lalkara hai to ab to hum na sirf apki ghanti matlab apke ghar ki ghanti bajainge balke us per poore do ghante se chabai hui cheengam bhi chipkainge! utar te phiriyega moch-nay ke sath aur baad main ghanti ko dettol se ghusal daite hue karrant bhi khaiyega mazedaar sa! (Allah na kare, i don’t mean this part.)

  9. محترمہ ‘زیست’ صاحبہ ، گستاخی کی معافی چاہتے ہوے ایک سوال پوچھنے کی جسارت کرنا چاہوں گا ، آپ کھاتی کیا ہیں؟

    1. kuch khaas nahi bas thorda murgh mazahia, ad’bi kabaab sath ba-tameez raita, thorda sa tanzia pulao or sath main hiziani chaaye ilaichi daal ke.

      1. Mohtarma apke fehm o farastay ke thatain marte samandar ko banda e khaksaar salute marta hai, jis khoobi se aap ne Veena Malik aur uss bhari pusht walay ke aba-o-ajdad pe roshni dali hai, Herodotus ki ruh bhe apko salam e ajizana pesh karti hogi. Mein baday ehtaram se Veeena Malik wali baat se ikhtilaaf karne ki jasaraat karunga kyun ke mere naqis aqal ke mutabiq agar apka Qasid Veena Malik ke aba o ajdad tak kisi tarha pohanch jata aur woh usi baat ko sun lete aur samajh bhe lete tou dunia na sirf ek azeem world record se mehroom reh jati balkay anay wali naslon mein waleedain ke pass na sirf had e burai balkay be-hayai ki bhe koi misaal na rehti.

        Dekhain mohtarma, baday ehtaram se pehle bhe mein ne iltamaas ki hai ke mere vehm o gumaan bhe na tha k aap koi khatun hain, aur iss darjay ki khatun warna mein gumaan mein bhe apka gins tabdeel karne ki jurrat na karta, lekin bas be-dehani aur neend ke zoor mein baat muh se nikal gai, teer tou andha tha jo kamaan se nikla, muje kya ilm tha ke woh kisi ki ruh ko cheer jaiga. Go ke apke azaar ka chaara nahi nashtar ke siwa, lekin mazay ki baat yeh hai k yeh sifaak maseeha mere qabzey mein hai aur bohat tez bhe hai. Bas ab Takbir kehne ki dair reh gai hai.

        Apka last comment bilkul beethoven ki 5th symphony ki tarha tha, kahin aisay jaisay abhi talwaarien chalne lagi hain, aur kahin aisay jaisay hazaaron meel ki musafaat ke baad manzil samne dekh kar rahat ka ehsaas ho, lekin aap ka andaz e tehreer Qurat ul Lain haider ki kahanion se milta julta hai, baar baar pechay mur ke dekhta huwa.

        Aur ainda meri aisi jurrat kahan ke kisi ke aurat honay ko lalkaarun, mera yaqeen karein, mein tou aaaj ke baad Murghi bhe nai khaonga, kyun ke uska taluk bhe kam o besh qabila e sinf e nazuk se hi hai, na sirf yeh balkay mein tou ainda Shehad khanay se bhe ijtinaab karunga ke kahin Makhion ki NGO muj pe koi fatwa na jaari kardey.

        Yousafi sahab likhte hain ke Daag sirf do chezon per achay lagte hain, ek chaand aur ek jawani pe, lekin apke rangeen panjay ka daag tou meri Qameez pe rounuma hogaya hai, haha woh Faiz sahab kia kehte hain

        Dagh dagh ujala, yeh shab e bar-guzeeda seher.
        woh intazar tha jiska, yeh woh seher tou nahi.

      2. mohtaram, maseeha saffaak sahi maseehai ka hunar to janta hai gar jo aapne us per bhi takbeer keh di to humari maseehai ko kon ayega…

        hm, acha wese jo aqal hai hi naqis uske mutabiq ki gai baat kya wazan rakhti hai? (=p). lekin tanz-o-mizah ko aik taraf rakhte hue hum aap se itefaaq kerne per majboor hain ke waqai aik had-e-behayai to teh hui (go veena sahiba ne piche bachaya hi kya hai ke jiski had-bandi ki jaye). wese kia aap kabhi kisi ese shakhs se hum kalam hue jiski baat bajaye muh se nikalne ke uske naak yan kaan se nikalti ho? baat to mohtaram muh se hi nakalti hai har kisi ke taham lazim ye hai ke hum baat muh se nikalne se peshtar thorda gayaan dehaan kerlain lehaza aap bila khauf-o-khatar murghi shehad jo marzi chahe tanawal farmaye koi masla nahi.

        humne Quratulain haider ko bohat kam pardha hai, khatoon likharion main humne Ismat chughtai aur bano qudsia ko zyada pardha hai… rahe Faiz… unke to kya hi kehne… kehte hain,

        Milay kuch ese juda yun hue ke Faiz ab ke
        Jo dil paey naqsh bane ga woh gul hai, daagh nahi

      3. Apki aksar baaaton ki kasafat ko janchne k liye muje ghanton gaur karna parta hai, maslan apki maseehai ko kon aur kyun ayega, kyun ke takbeer tou hilal chez pe kahi jati hai, mera matlab hai Hilal Khanay wali chez pe, apko hilal tou nahi kiya ja sakta, albata qatal zaroor kiya ja sakta hai :p

        Mein janta tou tha ke baat bhe muh se nikalti hai, kaan, naak ya kisi aur jism ke hissay se nahi magar phir bhe yaad dehani ka shukria, agar aap ki rehnumai muje iss mauqay pe na milti tou shayad mein bohat baday ilm se mehroom reh jata, waise Veena Malik ki harkaat o saknaat se muje iss umar mein tou kamazkum ikhtilaaf nahi, shayad jab chandi sur pe utar aye tou muje bhe woh buri lagne lag jai :p. Aur ek baar phir se mein apka jitna shukria ada karsakun kum hai, aap ne muje sinf e nazuk ke qabiley se taluk rakhne walay chirind parind khanay ki ijazat de kar qeht se bacha lia warna mera chand he dino mein mera shumaar bhe somalia ke kisi door daraz ke qasbay mein bhook ki shidat se sharsaar sakhs jaisa ho jata. Allah unpe Karam karey.

        Waise mujhe zyada ittefaq nahi huwa Ismat Chughtai ko parhne ka, lekin Qurat ul Lain Haider aur Bano Qudsia Sahiba ko baday shauq se parha hai. Bano Qudsia sahiba ka andaz e tehreer go ke Mumtaz Mufti ki tarha shookh nahi, aur mein shokh chezon ka behad shauqeen hon lekin phir bhe himmat kar ke parh he lia tha..

        Rahi baat Shairi ki, tou zindagi mein sirf Iqbal, Faiz aur Faraz ko parha hai, aur Faiz ki Manzar kashi pe banda fida hai, ghanton sehr mein giraftaar rehta hai…

        bujha hai Rozan e Zindaan tou dil yeh samjha hai
        Teri Mang sitaron se bhar gai hogi..

      4. = ) is qadar ghubaar rakhte hain aap humare mutalliq yani ab humain khulam khula din daharde qatal ki dhamki di jarahi hai! humain to ab jaker sahi ma’aino main ehsas hua ke teen talwar wale dharne main shamil PTI ke humdardon ko kesa mehsoos hua hoga jab unhe aik adad kasrat-e-wazan wale fanuni-badmaash ne qatal ki dhamki di hogi! Hum poochte hain kahan hai blogosphere ki police yan wo bhi Lan-dan ki metro police ki tareh soi pardi hai! humain to yaqeen hai mohtaram aap per irada-e-qatal ki hi nahi saazish-e-qatal balke iqdaam-e-qatal ki koi na koi tazeer to bila shuba aaid hoti hi hogi! hum masoom si jaan ne akhir apka bigarda kia hai jo awwal roz se aap humare darpe hue bethe hain? lekin chalye agar aap ese hi khush hain to hum sirf or sirf Faiz ki khatir yeh qurbani bhi diye jate hain.

        Faqat guzarish ye hai ke aap abhi humare qatal ka irada thordi dair ko mo’akhir kerdain to hum aapke behad mashkoor honge. Wo darasal baat ye hai ke hum abhi do adad tasveeron ko mukamil kerne or aik adad kitaab ko pardhne ke marahil se guzar rahe hain or yeh dono hi fel ese hain ke humain bohat aziz hain! hum is jahan ko kherbaad kehne se pehle unhe mukamil hota dekhna chahte hain. wese humare takhaiyul main zeest baad az zeest ka behad dilkush manzar hai! sab se pehle to hum Faiz ke mulaqati banainge phir Ishfaaq sahib ki baithak ka bhi chakar lagainge… Manto ke sath shaam ki chaaye piyaige ‘Zeest Chaaye-Khana’ main baith ker, Faiz se to hum wese rozana park main mila kerainge, dur tak chehal qadmi kerte hue unse bohat kuch sunainge! humain insab se bohat muhabbat hai, humara manna hai ke yeh log chaand per baith ker likha kerte the ke inke lafz isqadar shaffaf or taseer liye hue hain… aaj bhi!

        Aur mohtaram jo chandi apke sar pe nahi utri abhi to hum konsa qabar main taangain latkaye bethe hain?         I looked at flickr, bohat acha kaam kya hai aapne, the poetic work too. my favorite shots are that of the cart in the rain with fallen autumn leaves on it, the really detail oriented wood carved door, and the one of the fence where the background is blurred… liked their compositions, thought provoking, they exhorted this aura of something profound to tell, like what happened right before this capture… something really intense, immensely emotional… a fight or a loud cry… a loud thunder maybe.. kuch is tareh se…. Cart in the rain wali is probably my most favorite, I could imagine myself sitting on it in the rain and if someone had pushed it that would have been a pure delight, an absolute joy! I would’ve been the happiest girl on earth!… I think that’s what an efficacious artwork does, it makes its viewer think, stimulate their imagination, aik lamhe main kahan se kahan pohanch jain aur us event/us lamhe ko apni tamaam tar hissiyaat ke sath mehsoos kerain… it’s a wonderful thing! I like rain but only Pakistani rain, the soil smells so good so heavenly! there is just something bohat khaas bohat khubsurat about that particular piece of land we call Pakistan!

A wonderful effort..I appreciate ur translation but being a Farsi ,pushto and Urdu speaking person I want to add into ur traslation ..in Farsi and pushto gulchean mean a flower collector ,u ll come arcoss this word in nashanas songs and ahmad zahir songs..here what faiz says that for a gulchean how the limp of rose bend itself means .for a beloved the lovers get into their knees I means they are ready for all sacrifice and what ever the beloved demand for ..so a gulchean mean an expert of anything ..gulchean means a perfectionist ,as he knows how to made things work for him or her .tjank u for ur traslation gulchean is not nightangle it can be the expert of anything but straight traslation would be a flower collector ..or the expert of flower collect ..
